Nokia’s Eseries phones tend to come with a lot of relatively unknown productivity/business software, ranging from the mundane/borderline useless Quickoffice app, to such gems like the Multiscanner. While I won’t be getting into the Multiscanner this time around, I do want to mention another awesome (preloaded) application: Active Notes.

Now all S60 phones (Eseries devices included) come with the regular Notes application, which is fairly simple and offers a quick interface for writing and sending short notes. It’s not bad, it’s just limited.

Active Notes builds on the same interface as Notes, but also throws in a number of cool features:

* Folder/notes organization - Allows you to group notes by folder and sort by different criteria
* Basic text transformation options - Lets you change text formatting - add colored text, bold, italic, and underline
* Embedded objects - drop a number of different file types: image, sound/video file, bookmark, business card, or just a general file into a note
* Link note to call - I love this feature. Select a contact, and your note will appear whenever you’re voice connected to the person

So to put it simply, Active Notes rocks. I have it set as my right selection key shortcut and honestly, I don’t see why Nokia doesn’t just replace the oldschool Notes with the Active version.

I did a quick search and found this sisx’ed install of Active Notes off of Nokia MOSH which purportedly allows you to run the app on any S60 device. It seems to work fine on my N81, but as usual install at your own risk:
